About Rittenhouse Sound

History, Mission, & Vision

Rittenhouse Sound is a non-profit chorus striving to preserve and evolve the rich art form of a cappella singing. We enthusiastically welcome and embrace any person who has a passion for singing, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or other identity.

Founded in December of 2014 by Larry Bomback and the late Eric Engelhardt, the chorus sings a wide variety of music styles including barbershop, choral, pop, and beyond in the lower-voice — ‘TTBB’ — range.

Our mission is to champion the transformative power of a cappella harmony and foster an inclusive environment for musical excellence and community engagement. Our vision, as Philadelphia's premier a cappella chorus, is to aspire to be a high-quality collegial group of singers who come together to unite, inspire, and elevate our community through the timeless art of unaccompanied vocal harmony.

Pillars

Performing

An integral part of Rittenhouse Sound.

The ensemble puts on two self-produced concert programs each year! In addition, we collaborate with other vocal ensembles in the area.

Additionally, as the chorus under the Philadelphia chapter of the Mid-Atlantic District of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the group competes in division- and district-level singing competitions. Many members of the chorus also form quartets that compete at these competitions.

Growing

Both as musicians and performers.

The ensemble works to refine its sound every week. While our members have varying levels of experience, they all share a love of music and singing, and we strive to reinforce this with personal growth in musicianship.

The leadership team also works to grow the group’s membership. In the last year, the chorus has doubled in size! 2024 is a bright and promising year: we encourage you to get involved now to be on the forefront of it all!

Socializing

Performing and growing while having fun.

Our rehearsals are an enjoyable space rooted in fellowship and camaraderie. Music has a way of creating lifelong friendships, and Rittenhouse Sound aims to be a vehicle for that in the greater Philadelphia area.

The conventions we partake in give our members the chance to connect with other singers in the tristate area, leading to new friendships and endless hours of singing together.
